Neons and Neutrals

When I was in high school, I always dreamed of being a fashion designer. Over the years my interest in fashion has waned (my younger self would be appalled at my work "uniform"), but I still remember one runway show that particularly influenced me. It was Matthew Williamson spring/summer 2002, and I was fascinated by the way he combined neons with neutrals and blush pink. And the scalloped hems? Come on, he was like 10 years ahead of the trend.

Side note - this was also around the time that Britney performed this, which had me very interested in everything sparkly and sheer.

Anyway, these images have always stuck in my mind, and I think that's why I'm so drawn to the neon trend in home decor right now. If you've invested in neutral sofas and carpets, adding neon accessories is a great way to make a room feel current.

Spotted: Year of the Cockatoo

If 2011 was the year of the owl and 2012 was the year of the fox, could 2013 be the year of the cockatoo? I had a pet cockatiel growing up, so this trend is right up my alley. Actually, I think getting a cockatoo lamp or throw pillow is way better than the real thing: get the look with none of the mess.

Squawk!

Confessions of a Furniture Hoarder

My Craigslist addiction is getting out of control.

This $40 etagere has been haunting me for weeks. Thing is, it's an hour away, I drive a Camry, and I have no room in my apartment for a new piece of furniture.

Did that stop me?

Nah.

When I look this fab in my imaginary office it will all be worth the effort.

Antique Garden Plans

I just finished reading an Elizabethan period novel and was taken with the descriptions of the era's architecture and landscaping. A large part of the book took place in the ornate pleasure gardens, which got me thinking about antique landscaping plans.

Charlotte Moss has an entire line of French garden plans and photographs for Soicher Marin. If you have  $2 grand to spare, these are my absolute favs.

If you're on a real worl budget, here's one set available at art.com.

And another set available at allposters.com.

Craigslist Hunting

I am beyond obsessed with this San Francisco town home designed by Tyler Dawson. Pink and gold and grey, oh my! Despite an abundance of vintage and antique furnishings, the space still feels completely modern. It gives me hope that I can create a chic home using Craigslist as my primary source.

I've long been in search for an oriental rug, and occasionally will check what options are on Craig. I always skip over the plush pastel orientals that have an 80s feel...but this home might just make me reconsider. Here's one for sale on ebay for $160. Of course this isn't nearly as fabulous as the one in the photo above...not even close. Could it work, or is it just too 80's?
